OJ Simpson found guilty! Bail revoked! By Dave Porter (AXcess News) Las Vegas - Football legend OJ Simpson was found guilty Friday in a Las Vegas courtroom of armed robbery and faces a minimum of 10 years in prison. His bail was revoked and he now sits behind bars in Las Vegas awaiting sentencing. The verdict came on the 13th anniversary of the death of his wife Nicole Simpson, which critics of the one-time Heisman Trophy winner say is 'OJ's judgment day' in believing the football star murdered his wife. Simpson was charged with robbery after setting up two sports memorabilia dealers through a sports memorabilia auctioneer to meet in a Las Vegas hotel room with a supposed buyer of sports memorabilia that had belonged once to OJ Simpson. The prosecution argued that OJ setup the whole affair and arrived at the Palace Hotel in Las Vegas with four accomplices to take back Simpsons sports trophies and memorabilia by force. One of those men brandished a gun, which brought about the armed robbery charges against Simpson. Unlike his highly publicized murder trial, OJ Simpson's media coverage dwindled thanks in part to the economic collapse of the housing sector and subsequent credit crisis that developed. Had Simpson's robbery trial received the media coverage of Nicole Simpson's murder trial 13 years ago, the former Heisman Trophy winner might have faired better in the Las Vegas Courtroom of Judge Jackie Glass. Judge Glass opened the trial against Simpson with stern judicial tact in not allowing OJ's celebrity status to sway her Clark County District Court proceedings. By the time OJ faced the jury's verdict on Friday, the courtroom was only half filled. OJ, 61, faces a minimum of 10 years in prison and when the jury found him guilty on all twelve counts Judge Glass immediately revoked Simpson's bail, reprimanding Simpson to the Clark County jail where now resides behind bars awaiting sentencing, which is slated for December 5th. OJ's long-time lawyer, Yale Galanter, said following the Las Vegas jury's guilty verdict that he would appeal, citing the fact that there were no blacks on Simpson's jury. Prosecutor Chris Owens called OJ "arrogant", saying that OJ Simpson thought it "OK, because it was my stuff", in his final rebuttal. Galanter's final comment to the jury was, "You may all say he didn't use common sense. But the real issue is whether he had criminal intent to commit a crime." But OJ wasn't on trial for his 'common sense', but for stealing $100,000 worth of sports memorabilia at gunpoint in a Las Vegas hotel room, said the prosecution in the OJ Simpson case. The jury obviously believed OJ intentionally planned to take the sports trophies by force and had setup the two dealers to do just that. OJ's accomplice in the case, Clarence Stewart, 54, were both tried together and after being found guilty on all 12 counts of robbery and other related charges were lead from the courtroom in handcuffs. Both Stewart and Simpson cried and wailed openly as they were lead away to jail where they both await sentencing. Four accomplices plead guilty to lesser charges and agreed to testify against Simpson, who according to witness testimony had ordered two of OJ's codefendants to bring guns and 'look menacing' in brandishing the weapons before the two sports memorabilia dealers when they were robbed. |
