Voters question Hickenlooper's ability to lead in Colorado gubernatorial race
Armando Duke
(AXcess News) Houston - Voters in Colorado appear to be leaning Blue in this year's gubernatorial race with Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper capturing 36% while Republican candidate Dan Maes captured 24%. Tom Tancredo trails both with 14% in the latest Rasmussen poll.
But some 26% of Colorado voters are unsure of who to vote for governor. Which ever candidate manages to capture voters' hearts could pull off a solid win.
Amongst registered Republican voters in Colorado, nearly one-in-four are undecided, placing Maes in a tough spot where his political party will have to do all they can in order to sway them at the polls come election day. Yet Maes' political machine may be running out of steam and cash.
Also hurting Maes chances were charges of political corruption and the drilling attack from Tancredo.
Maes' outspoken critic, Tancredo, was quoted as saying on Sunday, "There are times when the party asks too much... . When they asked me to support someone like Dan, I simply will not do it."
Yet next week's poll of Colorado voters could chip away more than a few points at the polls of Democratic candidate John Hickenlooper after questions arose out of yet-third police brutality case surfacing in Denver, leaving voters question the Democrats leadership skills if elected governor of Colorado when he can't seem to keep his administration in line in the capitol.
Denver Manager of Public Safety Ron Perea announced Monday that he will resign his post effective at the end of August.
Perea had been facing calls for his resignation following three cases of alleged police brutality by law enforcement officers under his watch at the Department of Safety.
Perea has held the manger's post less than a year.
Hickenlooper indicated on Monday that Perea's resignation was over the public's trust in him - not his background. Still, it was Hickenlooper who opponted him to the post and in voters' eyes that could mean a turnover in voter confidence.
