Ask how big a container a job needs and the answer usually arrives as a room count. Two bedrooms, a garage, a kitchen. It is a reasonable way to describe a job and a poor way to size a container, because it measures only one of the two limits that matter.
A roll-off container is measured in cubic yards, which describes the space inside it. Every size also carries a tonnage allowance, which describes what the truck can lift. Sizing is the process of finding out which of those two runs out first.
The Two Limits, and Why Only One Binds
Every load hits one of two ceilings. It either fills the space or it reaches the weight, and it is very rare for both to happen together.
Bulky debris fills the volume before it reaches the tonnage. Dense debris reaches the tonnage before it fills the volume. Once the material class is known, the binding constraint is known, and the size follows from that rather than from the number of rooms.

The bottom two rows are where most sizing mistakes happen, and they nearly always run in the same direction.
Weather belongs in the same calculation and is routinely left out. Soil, mixed debris and anything absorbent gains weight in the rain, so a load that sat comfortably inside its allowance on a dry Friday can exceed it after a wet weekend. On a soil job in an unsettled week, the working assumption should be that the load will be heavier on collection day than it was when the last barrow went in.
Why the Biggest Container Is the Wrong Default
The instinct on any large job is to order the largest container available on the theory that spare space is cheap insurance. On bulky material that instinct is correct.
On heavy material it produces a specific and expensive failure. A 30 yard container measures about 20 feet long, and filled with soil or broken concrete it exceeds what can be lifted safely and legally. The consequence is not a surcharge. It is material coming back out of the container before the truck can move at all, by hand, on collection day, with a driver waiting.
That is why an experienced hauler asked to quote a concrete job will often propose a smaller container than the customer expected. It is not a downsell. It is the only size that can actually leave the property.
There is a second reason the low-sided container suits heavy work, and it is about labor rather than physics. Broken concrete, brick and tile are loaded by hand or by barrow, and lifting that material over a six foot wall is slow and hard on people. Over a four foot wall it can be tipped rather than lifted. On a masonry job the shorter container is usually both the safer load and the faster one to fill.
The Three Sizes and What Separates Them
The useful distinction between the common sizes is not simply that one is bigger.
- A 15 yard container measures about 16 feet long and sits low, around 4 feet high. The low walls matter more than the capacity, because heavy material can be loaded over the side rather than lifted up.
- A 20 yard container shares the 15 yard footprint at greater height, roughly 6 feet. It occupies the same ground and holds a third more, which makes it the default for mixed remodel work.
- A 30 yard container measures about 20 feet long at the same 6 foot height. The extra length is what makes it a construction and commercial size rather than a residential one.
Footprint is the detail people miss. Stepping from 15 to 20 costs no extra driveway. Stepping from 20 to 30 costs four more feet of it, and on a tight residential lot that is often the deciding factor rather than the debris.

Read the last column rather than the third. The 15 yard is not simply the small one; it is the size heavy work is ordered in, and it is chosen for its low walls and its tonnage headroom rather than because the job is small.
The Fill Line Is Not a Suggestion
Every container carries a fill line, and it marks the maximum safe load height rather than a guideline about tidiness.
Two things depend on it. A load above the line cannot be tarped, and an untarped load is not legal to move on a public road. A load above the line is also unstable in transit, which is a hazard to whoever is behind the truck.
The practical version is simple. Anything heaped above the rails has to come down before the container leaves, and that work happens on collection day whether or not anyone planned for it.
Placement Often Decides the Size Before the Debris Does
A roll-off truck requires clear overhead access to tilt and set the container down. Where that access does not exist, the size question is settled before the material is even discussed.
The constraints that decide it:
- Overhead clearance. Low branches and utility lines rule out the longer boxes first.
- Approach angle. A truck needs a straight run at the drop point, not just a space at the end of it.
- Surface. Soft ground and newer asphalt both favor a shorter, lighter-loaded container.
- Width. Narrow drives and shared access set a hard ceiling regardless of the job.

Most sizing guidance is a table of room counts against container sizes. It is not wrong, and it fails on exactly the jobs where getting it wrong costs the most, because it never asks what the material is.
A two-car garage full of cardboard boxes and a two-car garage full of broken patio slab are the same room count and completely different jobs. One is a 20 yard filled to the line. The other is a 15 yard loaded a third of the way up.
The question that actually sizes a container is therefore not how big the space is. It is what is coming out of it, and roughly how much of that is heavy.
The same gap explains why two quotes for what sounds like the same job can differ so much. One was priced off the room count and the other off the material, and only the second one survives contact with the actual pile. A quote that never asked what the debris is has not really been given.
What to Have Ready When Booking
Three pieces of information settle the size in one conversation:
- The material class, in plain terms: household, remodel, roofing, masonry, soil
- A rough quantity for the heavy portion specifically, such as square footage and thickness for concrete, or roof area and layer count for shingles
- The placement, including the approach and anything overhead
