Mack Prioleau is and myself have been frequent visitors to the cinema this year and as part of our season end review we are going to talk a little today about the best movies of the year. We have seen a huge range of movies hitting the silver screen over the year and as usual there have been some flops, some hits and some surprises. Compiling the list was tricky especially given some late releases which we had to consider, nonetheless Mack Prioleau and I have done it and here are our top 5 movies of 2018.
BlacKkKlansman
The bewildering story of a black police officer who infiltrates the notorious black-hating Ku Klux Klan was an offering from Spike Lee this year which set tongues wagging. Stranger still that this was based on a true story, the movie portrayed the racism which existed during that time perfectly and then was able to draw parallels between then and now, to show us that we haven’t made the giant leap that we all thought. The movie is laced with dark comedy but beyond that there is a hard truth to learn.
A Star is Born
In what is the 4th remake of a Star is Born, Bradley Cooper took a risk with this movie and it paid off in spades. Cooper recruited Lady Gaga to join him in the reprise of the role which made Barbra Streisand so famous and she delivers with aplomb. Both Gaga’s acting and Cooper’s singing abilities were welcome surprises and the movie was delightfully shot from beginning to end.
Bohemian Rhapsody
One of the most hotly anticipated movies of the year was Bohemian Rhapsody a biopic of the late, great Freddie Mercury and the chronicle of both his and their rise to fame, culminating with the iconic gig at Live Aid in 1985. This is a heartbreaking tale of course but the film focusses instead on the genius of Freddie Mercury rather than the promiscuity which lead to his untimely demise. I challenge anyone to go and see this movie and not be singing along all the way through, and on their way out of the cinema as well, an absolute delight.
Deadpool 2
Deadpool continues to break down the boundaries of comic book heroes and this second installation was everything that you could have wanted. Ryan Reynolds was back as his jabber-mouth, rude and indignant self who is on the hunt for his wife’s killers. This sequel is far darker than the first movie and whilst the timely musical interludes and the quick-witted jokes are still there, we see a more sinister side to everyone’s favorite coming book hero in this second movie. The brutality, the humor, the cinematography and the epic fight scenes are all that you need in a Deadpool movie and this second one does not disappoint.
It was a hard choice but these our mine and Mack Prioleau’s choices, what do you have for 2018?
