The Northshore public tag agent can now process lost-title replacements and dealer trade-in titles under Louisiana’s expedited title procedure, with the title ready for pickup the next business day.
COVINGTON, La. (October 1, 2026) Title Authority LLC, a Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles public tag agent (PTA #399) based in Covington, has been approved to offer expedited title processing at its Highway 25 office. Vehicle owners replacing a lost title and dealerships that need a title on a vehicle taken in on trade can now request expedited processing. Once the paperwork is complete and the fees are paid, the title is issued for pickup at the Covington office the next business day. Visit the Title Authority duplicate title requests page for service details.
The change matters most to people with a deadline. A lost title can stall a private sale, a refinancing, or a move out of state. For a dealer, a vehicle without a title in hand is inventory that cannot be retailed or wholesaled.
What Expedited Title Processing Means
Expedited processing is set by state law, not by the office. Under Louisiana Revised Statute 32:707.6, once the fees are paid and every required document has been received, the title is issued and directed to the public tag agent for pickup within 24 hours of the request, excluding weekends and holidays.
In practice, that means a request completed at the Title Authority counter on a Tuesday is ready for pickup on Wednesday. A request completed on a Friday is ready the following Monday. The clock starts only when the file is complete, so you must resolve any missing signature or unreleased lien first.

“A lost title is a small piece of paper that can hold up a big transaction,” said Lou Dutel, owner of Title Authority. “Being able to turn it around by the next business day saves our customers time and money, and it does the same for the dealers we work with.”
Why Trade-In Titles Are Under Pressure
Dealer trade-ins have become harder to clear. Edmunds reported in its Q4 2025 insights report on underwater trade-ins that 29.3% of trade-ins toward new-vehicle purchases carried negative equity, the highest share since early 2021. The average amount owed on those vehicles reached a record $7,214, and 27% of them were $10,000 or more underwater.
Each of those vehicles requires a loan payoff, a lien release, and a title that must transfer to the dealer’s name before the car can be resold. When a title is lost along the way, or never arrives from the lienholder, the vehicle sits. Expedited processing shortens the wait on the title itself to a single business day.

Who Uses the Service
The office expects two groups to use expedited titles most. The first is individual owners who have lost, damaged, or never received a title and need a replacement quickly, often because a buyer, lender, or move is waiting on it. The second is dealerships on the Northshore and across the Greater New Orleans area that take vehicles in on trade and need clean title paperwork in the dealer’s name to sell them.
Title Authority already handles duplicate titles, dealer transfers, corrected titles, lien work, and notary services at the same counter. Because the office can notarize documents during the same visit, customers can often complete a file in one stop rather than leaving to find a notary and coming back.
“Most delays we see come from paperwork that was almost right,” Dutel said. “We check the file before it goes in, so the next-business-day window actually means next business day for the customer.”
Preparing a Request
The expedited window begins only when the application is complete. Owners replacing a lost title should bring a valid photo ID, the vehicle registration or other proof of ownership, and a lien release if the vehicle was financed. Title Authority completes the state Vehicle Application (DPSMV 1799), reviews it for accuracy, and notarizes where required. Dealers should call ahead with the vehicle details so the office can confirm what the file needs before the trip.
