Before he wrote a bestselling book about becoming your best self, Sund spent years watching capable people wait for someone to tell them they were ready.
Long before Chris Sund became a bestselling author and keynote speaker, he was learning about human potential in one of the most demanding fields in the country. He has spent more than a decade in healthcare staffing, an industry where the work is personal. Every open position on the other end is a hospital unit, a clinic or a patient who needs care.
Those years shaped the message of his book, You Are Capable of More: A No-Excuses Guide to Becoming Your Best Self, and the personal mission behind it: to help as many people as possible become the best version of themselves.
Building Without a Playbook
Sund helped build a company from the ground up, which meant making big decisions without a playbook and long before anyone could promise they would work out. Along the way, he spent much of his time hiring, developing and promoting people. Over and over, he watched capable people hold back until someone told them they were ready.
That pattern became the heart of his message: stop waiting for permission and start taking ownership.
What COVID Taught Him
He also worked through COVID, when almost overnight, healthcare staffing became one of the most demanding places to work in the country. Hospitals needed clinicians faster than ever, the ground shifted every week, and the team had to keep showing up for the facilities and clinicians depending on them while carrying the weight of it themselves.
Sund learned that in moments like that, people do not need a perfect plan. They need someone who will make the next decision, own it and keep everyone moving. Later, the company went through an acquisition, a different kind of test. Change on that scale brings uncertainty for everyone, and his job was to help people stay focused on what they could control while the future was still being written.
Through all of it, the lesson that stuck with him is the one at the heart of his book: you do not get to wait until you feel ready.
“Self-doubt does not have to disappear for you to move forward,” Sund said. “It can come along for the ride. It just does not get to drive.”
From Experience to a Book for Everyone
The lessons came from his career, but Sund wrote You Are Capable of More for a general audience. It is a book about personal potential. To understand how common that untapped potential is, he surveyed more than 200 working adults. Ninety-two percent said they believe they are capable of more than they are doing. Seventy-eight percent said they delay action on things that matter to them, 85 percent said they second-guess themselves because of their own inner voice, and 71 percent said they fall short of their potential daily or weekly.
The biggest barriers, in order, were self-doubt and fear of failure, being too busy, and getting comfortable. None of those is about ability.
Through honest personal stories, including his own setbacks, the book shows readers how to move through self-doubt, take ownership of their choices and build the habits that turn good intentions into progress. Chapters such as Train Your Inner Voice, Time Is Your Edge and The Comfort Ceiling take on those barriers directly, and each one ends with actions readers can take that day.
“There is more inside of you than you have been using,” Sund said. “Most of the time the next level is not about learning something new. It is about finally acting on what you already know.”
His belief that people are often ready before they believe it was the subject of a CEO Weekly feature.
