A York County car accident resulted in the loss of two lives. One of the dead was a Grammy award-winning songwriter named LaShawn Daniels. He was best known for writing the lyrics to several popular songs used by Beyonce and Michael Jackson. The crash occurred near Rock Hill on Route 5 East.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that two other people were injured in the accident.

York County Coroner Sabrina Gast identified Daniels as one of the victims. He was 41 years old and he lived in Waxhaw, North Carolina in Union County with his wife, April.

Jackie Dean Moss, 32, was likely the other fatality according to Gast’s report. He lived in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. He was driving a truck when his vehicle struck Daniels’s van. Because both vehicles caught fire after the collision, a DNA test is ongoing to provide definite confirmation that Moss was the second victim.

April Daniels said in a statement: “It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, family member, and friend LaShawn Daniels, who was the victim of a fatal car accident in South Carolina. Daniels was a man of extraordinary faith and a pillar in our family.”

The other two who were injured during the traffic accidents were from Rock Hill.

Daniels was nicknamed Big Shiz and known for writing “Say My Name” for Destiny’s Child. Other popular performers who sang the songs he had written included Toni and Tamar Braxton, Whitney Houston, and Jennifer Lopez.

Later details emerged confirming that both Moss and Daniels were killed on the scene. A pick-up truck driving in the other direction struck the two vehicles that were travelling in the opposite direction, causing the fatalities. There was no information available on whether or not alcohol was involved in the accident.

Another woman was killed Saturday after a teenaged driver struck her vehicle head-on. Five others were injured. The crash occurred on Pleasant School Road near Gaffney at about 5 p.m.

The woman was identified as Jonica Lankett Camp. The 16-year-old driver and five other occupants all survived the crash. At least two were airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition while three others were taken to hospitals with lesser injuries. There is no information as to whether criminal charges will be filed.
